Amalgam Fillings are the traditional fillings that have been used for many years. It has slowly become the less popular option, mainly because of cosmetic reasons, and has been replaced by white composite fillings. At Southside Family Dental we no longer use amalgam for fillings, as composite is an equally effective filling with cosmetic and other advantages.
- Amalgam is an alloy of silver, tin, copper, and mercury
- Amalgam fillings are also known as silver fillings because of their distinct appearance
- Mercury is used in amalgam fillings to bind the silver, tin and copper together to make it a strong durable filling.
